After an intense Term 2 and a Trend Forecasting course, I can honestly say that I was looking forward to a two-week break. Just lounging around the house, with no cares in the world. Half way through the break and constant texts exchange with Armando, we were eager to head back to school. Yes, we actually were, but we were more eager for our Advanced Topics Class for Merchandising and Fashion Design. We both are among the few, or the crazies, to spend a lot of money for this trip, this class/course will give us a really big eye opener of the fashion industry.
It is week number two for this special topics class and we are excited. We have projects and research to do on who is who in the fashion industry. Although, we are going to New York City, this is all business with little time to play. Our first project is to research the company’s that we are going to visit. Each student got a certain company, which brings me to my blog post.
I have the honor to research a company called M&S Schmalberg. M&S Schmalberg, located in the middle of the Garment District, has been in business for more than 90 years creating luxurious silk colorful flower pins. This family owned and operated company are “the largest direct manufacturer of custom silk flower pins in the USA“. According to their website they are one of the few remaining houses that do hand-made creations. These creations are still made by hand since its opening, making their creations one-of-a-kind artisans. We have seen their creations grace the runway from designers like Marchesa, Carolina Herrera and Oscar de la Renta just to name a few. They have popped up in many advertising campaigns as well. These artisans creations are inspiring to look at. They have even popped on a dress worn by Sarah Jessica Parker’s character Carrie Bradshaw’s Sex in the City.
That is all the information I have so far, I will be happy to report more on them on my return from the New York Trip. We are all excited planning our week. I will blog as much as I can leading up to our trip, during and on your way back. We just want to enjoy Fashion Week!
