Manus x Machina

Another year and another Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute Gala came and went. This years theme was Manus x Machina: Fashion in the Age of Technology, a very well conceived theme, I was very curious to see the results. All day today, on all social media platforms the Met released teasers as well as designers, models, celebrities and personalities, and it surely did not disappoint.

I was curious to see if anyone was going to take the theme literal. Have you seen Machina? A very cleaver thriller, a must watch film, with amazing visual effects. After watching “The First Monday in May” the documentary from last years MetGala “China: Through the Looking Glass”, I am excepting a bigger production and fashions. As I sat through a very slow The Huntsman: Winters War, I could not help but to admire Colleen Atwoods amazing costumes but above all the costumes she made for Emily Blunt’s icy character Freya in metallics, silver, gray and a hints of dusty blues. Colleen used her research of those period pieces and the technology they had to come up with those designs. I couldn’t help but to think about this years Met.

I thought about a specific Alexander McQueen gown that graced the runway for A/W16, that looked flawless on Nicole Kidman, making her one of my best dressed this evening. Juno Temple looked stunning in Erdem, the Londoner uses the latest technology to enhance his designs and it shows. Mackenzie Davis looked ravishing in Altuzarra, making taking the theme less literal but made feel more armour like, yet she looked great. I think the top of my list is SuperModel Cindy Crawford in a hugging-body-fit-like-a-glove Balmain gown. I literally stared at the picture for a good 5 minutes. To be that age, to work that shimmer metallic gown, with bits of see through sleeves. Cindy looked fucking amazing. She literally shut it down for me. Cindy to me is the best dressed of the night. Selena Gomez, to me looked amazing in a tone-down Louis Vuitton by Nicholas Ghesquiere number. It was still young, flirty and very fashion forward. Soairse Ronan as well, looked amazing in Christopher Kane.

As for the guys, Jared Leto looked amazing in Gucci, as always. Rami Malek in Dior looked dapper. Zayn Malik in Versace looked really cool and edgy and spot on to the theme. Versace’s A/W16 collection had a hint of technology and adorned with machine like parts that looked like patterns on the clothes. Donatella took it a bit further to give Zayn’s suit coat some metallic sleeves that looked a bit like Mortal Kombat’s Jax. Although, Zayn looked way better and more posh. Wiz Khalifa looked very amazing in a whit tux by Rag and Bone.

Until Next Time!
